I'm really interested in speech clubs so like debating, mock trial, spoken word. Can I get in despite having had no experience in any of them? Will I be trained? Can I (at some point) enter competitions? Obviously I'm not expecting to represent Brown my first semester or anything, but you know, eventually - is it easy to get involved? Are there tryouts? Are they competitive/intimidating?
On a similar note, is getting involved with clubs and stuff in Brown easy in general? Or do most people come in with prior experience and do they end up getting a significant advantage? Is it possible to just jump in something completely new and figure out whether it works for you?

At Brown it is generally very easy to get involved in any clubs and things without much experience. Brown is really great for opportunities like this especially since we're a small school. There's an activities fair at the beginning of the year when you can find out more about clubs and when they begin meeting! You should definitely try it out!!

yay!!! so I'm in debate, but not mock trial debate: there's a tryout but usually they don't knock out people cos the club is really inclusive. and ur wrong cos you can absolutely represent Brown in your first semester! Brown sends teams to competitions in different colleges almost every week (at least every other week). and like other colleges Brown does the American Parliamentary style (this website is really useful!!! www.apdaweb.org/). ya there are trainings regardless of whether you have done debate before cos American parliamentary is really different from high school ones Mock Trial: it's a very small team due to the nature of the activity, so it's quite competitive to get in. they have a tryout, and if u dun get in u can always do the tryout again when ur a sophomore. I heard it's loads of fun and people are really close there don't know about spoken word but there's a toastmaster club which is basically a public speaking club for most of the clubs u can jump in without any prior experience! (becos that's the spirit of Brown!!!!) just to give u a great example, Brown's Taekwondo is No.1 in the country and most of the kids only started doing Taekwondo when they entered Brown. and they trained u to become national champions! maybe there are very few clubs that wont let u get in if u don't have any experience, but if they don't they probably do it for a really strong reason (maybe the nature of some activities reli means u can't do it from the very beginning)
